Book Review: Paper Swans*

image– Jessica Thompson

Summary:
Ben Lawrence seems to have it all – the hot job, the flashy car, the luxurious apartment. But one tragic day in his past mars his future. Since the events of that day he hasn’t truly got close to anyone. He made a promise that love was the price he would pay for his mistakes.
When Effy Jones – a bright, ambitious charity founder – walks into the PR firm where Ben works, neither realise that their lives are about to be turned upside down.
Paper Swans tells of how love can conquer all, and how when everything is broken one person can help to put the pieces together…

My thoughts:
I’m really in two minds about this book. On the one hand I thought the actual storyline was good (although it did have the typical romance) and I loved the whole charity thing. However, I felt like the book dragged so much and I didn’t have the urge to pick it up. It actually only took me 6 days to read, which isn’t too bad, but it felt like much longer.

I liked Ben for the majority of the time, but it was frustrating to see the way he acted with Effy. His whole mysterious background was a good addition to the story, even though it felt like forever until we really knew about it!

Effy was likeable, but I guess I was more on Ben’s side and how she reacted in certain situations really annoyed me.

As I was getting to the end, I actually realised that I probably wasn’t connecting with the book so much because I wasn’t happy reading about a romance. Right now, I’m just really not into romance and reading about happy couples, or even couples breaking up. Reading Paper Swans this week probably wasn’t a great idea, but it was too late to stop once I figured that out! I should add that I actually read the last 80 pages or so in one sitting, and I was a little hooked by that point – I just wanted to see how things turned out!

So this book has had great reviews, so I really don’t want to turn people off with this review. Take into account my last paragraph, and if you read it, hopefully you enjoy it more than I did! As I said above, the actual storyline was good and I did like that. The whole story just wasn’t for me in the end.
