I was given the chance to read and review this book, and I feel like it was really different to what I expected. Now it is described as a fantasy-romance and I knew that it would have violence, sex and romance in it, mixed in with the fantasy ‘scene’. When I heard the description, and read the synopsis on Goodreads I was definitely interested. Saying that, it still surprised me, and I haven’t been disappointed!
It’s hard to believe that Soul Catcher is E.L. Todd’s first book. I want to add that I am not just saying that because I am reviewing – I really, really enjoyed it. The writing is brilliant, and the characters just have so much depth. You want to find out what events have led them to be the way they are. There are some graphic scenes including violence and sex. If you’re really unsure about reading stuff like that, then I would probably avoid it. It is quite an important part to the story, and I did like the storyline despite the sometimes dark subject! Some parts were difficult to read because of the subject matter but it definitely didn’t ruin the story for me at all. With this, the book does stand out because, after reading it, I still don’t believe that I have read anything like it! I think it really added to the characters and you felt like you could understand what they were going through. I really loved Aleco, I think he was my favourite! I enjoyed reading about his past, and how he came to be.
The actual storyline itself was great, and I never felt lost in the writing. I think it did start off a little slowly, but that’s to be expected in most books I think, as the plot builds. I was hooked pretty early on, and then I got to about 65% and it was really difficult to put down. In fact, most nights I fell asleep reading (and had to go back a couple of pages because I’d be trying to read when I was just too tired!) The world is great too, and everything is believable – as much as a fantasy can be!
One thing that annoyed me? I just wanted to read more… It sort of ended on a cliffhanger. Like, something is happening and it’s going to be in the next book! I can’t wait for the sequel!
