– Nathan Penlington
As a child, Nathan Penlington loved the ‘Choose Your Own Story’ adventure books; a book in which you had options and could choose the path yourself. As an adult, Nathan bought the first 106 books when he discovered them for sale on ebay. What he didn’t know was that the books would end up taking him on his own adventure. As he was reading through the books, he was also reading notes from the previous owner; scribbled in the margins and on pieces of paper were the hints of an unhappy child.
It had been over 20 years since those scribbles were first made, but Nathan had the need to find out more about this unhappy boy. Was he okay? Did he move on from the bullies and his unhappy time at school? Finding Terence Prendergast became his new project, and obsession. Throughout the journey to finding Terence, Nathan realises that he has his own problems that he needs to face and we’re given a good look into two childhood stories.
When I first read the summary for this book, I felt the urge to read it. However, when it arrived on my doorstep, I wasn’t that excited any more – I can’t explain why. Upon reading the first few chapters though, I had changed my mind again. Nathan is very likeable, and I’m sure his obsessive nature will be familiar to some. It’s easy to become caught up with doing something so much, that it just takes over your life. Admittedly, I do think that he went too far at times, and some of the things that he did were a little weird!
Despite that, I found the book to be quite funny actually, which is not something that I was expecting. With Terence’s dark words in the forefront of your mind, you can only wonder if Nathan’s quest is in vain. Will he find Terence? Did he move on and live happily ever after? That’s what kept me reading.
